Selecting A Chandelier

chandeliers
Stefan Rockhaus asked:

Chandeliers are special lights that have been in use for a long time. The word chandelier comes from the French word ‘chandelle’, which means candle. In the earlier period, these lights were made of animal fat and were attached to wooden spikes. They used to get support from the ceiling.

There was no electricity during that time, so the substitutes that were available were small sputtering tallow wall sconces, or the glow of a fireplace. Thus, chandeliers provided better lightning. They were generally used in medieval churches and abbeys in the 15th century.

Earlier, these chandeliers used to be designed for the use of the wealthy and powerful, as only they could afford them. However, it can be said that the journey of the chandelier started from homes in between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Chandeliers are considered as a symbol of status, wealth, and beauty, and have been widely used in movies to show the status of any wealthy family. It is believed that to build an impressive and complete home structure, these chandeliers are capable to develop a unique and elegant beauty.

Selecting a chandelier can be a little bit difficult. It may create confusion for you to decide on the right chandelier for your entry hall or dining room. These chandeliers come in many different varieties and sizes. Mostly, people go for shiny brass multi-arms with faux candle socket and flame-shaped bulbs.

If you are looking for an adjustable chandelier for your home and you cannot decide on the width of the chandelier, then first of all you should calculate the dimensions of the room. You just need to add the width and length of the room in feet, and then convert this figure to inches. The number you get in inches is the near about diameter of the chandelier that you need to purchase. Some people prefer oversized chandeliers for their room; they can be used design wise, but an undersized chandelier must be avoided except in the case where you are using multiples.

Secondly, the placement of the chandelier is very important, so that it shines properly. In the dining room, the chandelier should be placed exactly over the center of the table. However, the roughly estimated gap between the table and the chandelier must be about 30 inches to avoid accidents.

In order to save wall art from being positioned in the dark, you can use recessed lights. You can also use a dimmer to create a preset level while dining and for special occasions.

You can use two to three low-voltage pendants in the place of a chandelier for light distribution for long and narrow tables.

A proper choice of chandelier can develop a style and enhance the beauty of your room. Always remember that while choosing a chandelier, you must keep in mind the place where it will be installed, and its size.

Designer Chandeliers, Wall Sconces and Bathroom Lighting

Julia Ritzenthaler asked:

Some places in every home or apartment can go from ordinary to extraordinary just by making a few key substitutions. Designer lights are a case in point. Check out the lighting fixtures in your home. Do they add as much to the decor as possible?

Lights are often an element that homeowners overlook. A subdued or recessed ceiling fixture in the entryway, a non-descript fixture at the top of an open staircase or centered over a dining room table: these are all areas that can be brought to life with proper light fixtures. While they are commonly referred to as designer lights, in reality they can be the cornerstones of a vibrantly stunning interior.

A striking hanging light that illuminates a foyer immediately catches the attention of your guests. The choice of an appropriate fixture depends on how large the foyer is and how high the ceilings are. The classic chandelier, that multi-light crystal centerpiece that we all remember gracing an entryway in countless movies and television shows, may be a little elaborate for a scaled-down foyer. But chandeliers come in all shapes and sizes.

A little investigation will help you zero in on the fixture that is most appropriate for your entryway. Designing your own chandelier is not out of the question if you just can’t find the fixture you have in mind. The right fixture will add drama and flare to the foyer. At the same time, it adds warmth and a sense of welcome to your guests.

Another light fixture that may do the trick is a pendant light. Pendant lights are generally smaller than chandeliers and consist of a single light source hanging from a ceiling fixture. Pendant lights are often found in kitchens, hanging over work-space islands or bar-type seating areas. They too add flare and drama to an entryway. Pendants have become very popular in the last few years, with a wide variety of materials and designs to choose from. Everything from Tiffany glass to metal sculptures can create unique and beautiful fixtures that not only highlight an area, but become the focus of the room and even the topic of conversation.

Turning your attention to that dining room fixture that is just ho-hum. Why not consider something other than a hanging light fixture? Wall sconces are a beautiful addition to the room and help to create a sense of coziness or intimacy, especially for those special dinner parties. Sconces also come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Rather than having a light source that shines directly down on the dining room table, sconces provide the ability to diffuse the light throughout the room, adding warmth and elegance to the experience. Sconces are also much better at highlighting wall decorations, such as paintings and wall hangings.

Depending on the type of staircase in the home, wall sconces are another option for lighting the way upstairs. Dimmer switches can control the amount of light thrown and again highlight your wall hangings. Like pendent lights, sconces are becoming more and more popular with home designers.

Another area that should be given full and careful consideration when determining lighting fixtures is the bathroom. Attractive lighting fixtures, including pendants and sconces can help transcend the room’s purely functional use. Mirrors that incorporate lighting also improve the look and the functionality, as both elements are key to good bathroom design. This is especially true in a guest bathroom where adequate lighting is a welcome addition as your guests touch up their makeup. Don’t forget that the mirrors themselves will reflect all the light sources in a bathroom, making the choice of mirrors an important element in considering the lighting effects in the room.

Whether you are overseeing a brand new home, doing some renovation or just want to change a few things to enhance the appearance of your home, don’t overlook designer lighting. For relatively little cost, well chosen and placed designer lights can make all the difference in the world. You’ll get props for being so creative and clever.

Purchase Rawhide Chandelier Lamp Shades For Southwestern Interior Design

chandelier
Craig Chambers asked:

Deciding to use rawhide and leather chandelier lamp shades for your wrought iron lamps is definitely the best way to get that fantastic western design you see in designer homes. Because they are an easy way to incorporate western style that combines well with wooden furniture and southwestern style accessories, many designers are choosing to use them in their home’s decor.

It is also very common to see these kinds of lamp shades used on large lamps in hunting lodges, western homes, and restaurants where a western or rustic design theme is used. You will probably be amazed at how easy it is to incorporate western design into your home by simply placing leather lamp shades on your chandelier lighting fixtures or other small lamps, or on lamps that require a smaller size western style lamp shade.

You will no doubt love the warm glow generated by the natural color of the rawhide and the welcoming ambiance it evokes no matter where you choose to place it. Rawhide chandelier lamp shades are without a doubt the best choice when wishing to design an elegant decorating flare without loosing western design.

A major reason these leather lamp shades are so sought-after for Spanish style chandeliers and other home lighting fixtures is because of the many options to choose from. When decorating with a particular color palette, you have the option of choosing a pig-skin shade in one of many colors to match, or the more rustic style rawhide shade.

It doesn’t matter which style of rawhide or leather chandelier lamp shades you need, you will certainly be happy with the style you can create with these shades. The fact that these chandelier shades are made by hand, gives them a certain uniqueness not found in commercially produced lamp shades.

Since they are each fitted with a special bulb clip, you will find it easy to turn even the smallest desk lamp or table lamp into a southwestern style lighting fixture. Try suspending a large wrought iron chandelier with leather chandelier lamp shades above an elegant dining table, or hung as the focal point in the front hall of a rustic style cabin.

You will like how it remarkably enhances your decor, bringing a welcoming environment and giving it a touch of rustic flare. It is the natural leather and rawhide that deepens the look of wood furnishings and rustic decor.

If you have been looking for the right lighting accessories to pair with rustic interior design, you will certainly enjoy the country style you can accomplish with leather shades. Because they are so versatile, chandelier shades will look amazing on lighting fixtures you already own, or on decorative metal chandeliers.

Not only do rustic chandelier shades give you the option of altering the style of your decorating, you will also enjoy how convenient it is to purchase them online. Find the perfect shade size for small lamps in several attractive styles and colors. You won’t come across a simpler way to add to the appeal of western home decorating than with the great style of rustic rawhide and leather chandelier lamp shades.

The Right Lighting Options For Your Home

chandeliers
Britney Simpson asked:

What is a home without the proper lighting? The most obvious comparison for this sort of establishment would be a barn or a prison. Would you like your home to give out such an impression when you have people over for a visit? Or would you like them to think that you have a home that makes them feel like they would never leave, because it is so cozy and warm?

Natural light is the best thing for a home, but as we all know, after daytime comes nighttime, and this is when you need other sources of light for your home. There are an infinite number of choices you can make when you want to purchase lighting appliances.

First of all you need to think about the central piece of your lighting options - the chandelier. As it lies in the center of your room, it stands as the most important source of light, but it is also one of the pieces that draw the most attention to it.

Depending on what kind of a feel you choose for your room, the chandelier has to compliment it. One of the most obvious advices I can give you is that you cannot choose a futuristic look for the furniture and wall decorations and slap a chandelier in the center that looks like it belongs in the Tudor dynasty. It doesn’t look very nice and you will look like you have no idea on how to decorate your home.

If you choose to go for the classic look, this sort of a chandelier is the perfect option for lighting. Another very important aspect you should keep in mind about decorating and lighting at the same time is that, if you choose a classic chandelier, lamps and all the other additional sources of light should be purchased according to the same style.

Another option you have for center sources of light is combining chandeliers with fans. You might think that fans have no place in your home, but no too long ago, these things were the way people expressed their social and financial status.

As a common belief, fans are out of place in a home, at least not on the ceiling of one’s living room. This is one of the biggest mistakes someone can make, because a fan can contribute to the air flow in your home, making it healthier and more comfortable.

When someone thinks of fans, the first thing that comes to mind is something very big, very noisy and the aspect of which has nothing in common with households. But there are some products that will not only compliment, but also improve the way your home looks and feels.

Now I am not saying that you should believe what I say, but let’s make an experiment. Let’s say that you are trying to make your living room like something that belongs at the beginning of the 20th century with wooden pieces and interesting sculptured shapes.

Now visit the website butlerlighting.com in order to look at the ceiling fans found here. These are the products that can make your home look better, and they also have a lot of lamps and other accessories that can compliment that style.

LED light bulb replacement for chandeliers and wall sconces that currently use 20w incandescent bulbs?

chandeliers
answers for people! asked:

Many of the light fixtures in my house use the small Candelabra base bulbs. Although they use 20-25w per incandescent bulb, that adds up to 50w and 100w for several of the rooms (and chandeliers). ALL of these bulbs have small, individual lamp shades covering the bulbs.

I’ve replaced most of the standard base incandescent bulbs with compact florescent bulbs to save on energy costs, and I want to do the same with these bulbs. I know there are compact florescent bulbs are available in this size, but I’m curious about venturing into LED bulb territory even if it costs extra in the short term. I’m most interested in long-term savings.

Normally, LED bulbs are used for directional lighting, but with the lamp shades, is it possible to get a similar amount of light? If yes, where can I find these bulbs?
