I want to replace a chandelier with a ceiling fan?

chandelier
jamaalwilson@sbcglobal.net asked:

I want to replace a huge chandelier with a ceiling fan. I have a narrow beam that is holding up the chandelier, do I need a bigger support beam to hold the fan up? The fan weighs a couple more pounds than the chandelier. I have 116 year old plaster ceilings that i don’t want to damage, any suggestions?

Can a US chandelier be installed in a UK home?

Kat B asked:

If the US chandelier is wired with a plug, then it obviously won’t work in a UK outlet… But what if the chandelier is made to be hardwired to the ceiling? Then will the wiring install into a UK ceiling with no problem?

An Introduction To Chandeliers

Susan Fielding asked:

Chandeliers are special decorative lights that have been used now for many years. They are in themselves a very traditional form of lighting, and have an elaborate history.

Chandeliers have always been associated with elegance, wealth, and beauty. Originally, chandeliers were used in medieval churches for their efficient illumination of large halls. They were generally created in the form of a wooden cross with a number of spikes which candles could be secured to, and the whole assembly was hung from a rope suspended from the ceiling.

Today, chandeliers are often the centerpieces of a well decorated home. They are designed to float in the room as an important part of the decor, and are the perfect way to set the mood in your home.

The type of bulbs used for chandeliers are small, lower wattage bulbs that are generally formed in the shape of a candle flame, although not all chandeliers are limited to small bulbs. The chandeliers available now are far more colorful than they were in the past. They are reaching new heights with dazzling effects. Some chandeliers are so big they fill vast halls and are studded with precious stones and gold.

When selecting a chandelier for your home, it can become a little difficult as there are so many different varieties and sizes to choose from. Never in the long history of chandeliers has there been so much choice as there is today.

Some people prefer to choose an oversized chandelier for their room, as this can be used to complement the decor, but undersized chandeliers must be avoided unless you are planning to install more than one.

Custom made chandeliers are an option that is available which will give you the finish you require. These are beautifully designed to bring you years of enjoyment. Then there are crystal chandeliers which are one of the most traditional ways to compliment a dining room setting. They are valued for the warm light they give off and the sparkle they add to a room. Finally, there are wrought iron chandeliers which are classic yet still so elegant in their simplicity.

The position of the chandelier is very important so that you get the full benefit from the light it provides. If you are installing a chandelier in your dining room, it should be positioned precisely over the center of the table.

Once you have made your choice of the perfect chandelier, you will be able to sit back and enjoy the brilliant beauty that it adds to your home.

Choosing the Right Chandelier For Your Room

Lighting is the single most effective means for creating dramatic effects and mood throughout your home, both inside and out. Proper lighting is as important as furniture for a complete look! Chandeliers especially can make a bright bold statement in any large room in your house. In fact, if designed and placed right, they could be the focal point of any room. A chandelier can make a small room look open and airy, and large rooms appear cozy and inviting. Manufacturers are making chandeliers in all kinds of styles and finishes, which gives you options no matter how your home is decorated. You could even buy lamps and wall sconces to match! Many factors should be considered when choosing a light fixture. What style works best in my house? How big is the room? How much am I really willing to spend?

Medium chandeliers (Up to 36’’ in diameter)

Medium sized chandeliers often find themselves in dining rooms or kitchens over the table or in the breakfast nook. However, many of today’s modern kitchens with vaulted ceilings, island countertops and airy atmospheres allow new creative and dramatic spots for the beauty of a chandelier as a grand but not overstated centerpiece.

Mini chandeliers (20’’ in diameter and under)

Mini chandeliers can be used over kitchen islands, in a bathroom, bedroom, or dressing room. Adding a mini-chandelier to the master bath will bring a touch of class while adding soft overall lighting. A mini-chandelier is also a perfect way to create a quiet reading or sitting area or even add some excitement to a walk-in closet or dressing room.

Foyer chandeliers (36’’ in diameter and over)

Since they are so large, foyer chandeliers need a large space to support them. That said, they can look great in rooms that have very high ceilings. When placing a chandelier in the foyer, take into consideration the height of the ceiling and size of the space. Optimal placement would be at least 9 feet from the floor. If there’s a window above the front door, you may want to center it in the window for maximum curb appeal. Foyer chandeliers are usually placed in the entryway of a home, but you can think out of the box with these too. Any large and airy space in the home can be the perfect place for the beauty of a large chandelier!

Outdoor chandeliers

The biggest new home trend is bringing the indoors outside! It is not uncommon to find the comforts of a living room on the back porch. Gone are the days of stumbling around the backyard with a flashlight or disposable torch. With today’s new technology, exciting new products are arriving constantly. Try a lovely outdoor chandelier to add a bit of charm and shed some light on outdoor dining.

From contemporary and traditional to uniquely ornate, there is a style for every budget and every taste.

How do I install an older Chandelier to a new Overhead lighting outlet, help?

chandelier
bluemoon38412 asked:

Unfortunately, the chandelier install instruction has been dumped. The chandelier has two wires, neither of which are color coded (black/ white) and the ground copper wire. However the outlet contains four wires, black, white, red, and green. Should the red wire be attached to BLACK or white wire, since all should be “hot”? Also, when attaching to the fixture wiring since there is not color, is this just a hit or miss as to which goes to black or white? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
